Proper Nail Care Practices
A lot of people tend to take nail care for granted as nails are rather resilient structures. They are able to regenerate and go back to normal even though they have undergone extensive damage. One downside to not taking care of nails properly is that they will look really ugly and unpresentable. In addition to this, cracked and dirty nails are very painful and prone to infection.
Most people know about the basics of nail care such as the trimming of nails and keeping them clean. Even though these are very basic, these still need to be constantly done as neglecting your nails will definitely lead to a lot of different problems in the future such as cracked nails or infections.
There are many do’s and don’t in nail care, but some people may not realize that they are already violating some of these things. One thing that people do with their nails without realizing that they are already damaging it is the use of nails as tools. Some use their nails to open containers or to screw things on or off. This exposes nails to physical damage which may lead to weaker nails.
Nails cannot be damaged through physical means alone. They can also be damaged when exposed to harsh chemicals or drying agents. It is best to avoid contact with these substances by using gloves. If it is really unavoidable, make sure to moisturize your nails afterward so that your nails are hydrated and will not break easily.
The cuticle area is one part of the nail that should be protected. This is because it is the area where new nail grows. Any damage in the nail bed may cause nails to grow deformed or infections may cause complications in the growth of a nail. It is best to just leave the cuticles alone, as some usually practice the pushing back of their cuticles due to the belief that nails will grow better.
Another practice that a lot of people do is the pulling of hangnails. This is a dangerous habit as the wrong pull might cause some serious damage to your nails. This will of course be very painful and may cause your entire nail to crack. Even though you are really irritated at seeing of feeling a hangnail, it is best to find a clipper and use it to cut it off rather than doing it yourself.
The use of nail polish is encouraged as it helps in protecting your nails from damage. Just be sure to rest your nails from time to time and don’t overdo the use of nails polish. Nail products that contain formaldehyde should also be avoided due to the health risks involved.
These are just a few simple things that you need to remember when taking care of your nails. It is important that you take care of your nails and be aware with what you are doing with them so that they may stay strong and healthy. For further knowledge about your nails, you may ask a dermatologist as to how to properly care for your nails.
